At first all the cats of this type were enlisted as endangered except for the Amur one. Only in the year 1986 that subspecies was also protected by the law and now it is prohibited to hunt these animals. Unfortunately, Russian legislation has a lot of breaches that literally drive to naught all efforts being taken by conservation specialists. Poaching is punished by fines so small that it is more profitable for poachers to pay those fines than to abide by the legislation. At least, 50 felines are being killed and sold abroad every year.

Nowadays, these animals are listed as endangered and are protected by the law and prohibitions of poaching. These animals are classified by IUCN (the World Conservation Union) and protected by the Convention of International trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora. It has been counted that today there are less than 200 wild Amur subspecies, and the day when there will be no such animals is already looming over the horizon. These animals used to inhabit Korea, China and most of the Russian Far East. The World Wide Fund has granted a large sum of money to maintain conservation efforts aimed at saving these animals.
