Adult female tigers generally produce a litter every two years. The gestation period is 100 to 112 days. The cubs are born blind and helpless. There are two or three cubs in the litter. Their mother nurses them until the cubs reach the age of six months old. At about two years of age, young tigers are able to find their own territory. The scent marks tell males that females are receptive. If a female tiger does not become pregnant, she is likely to return to estrus in 30 to 60 days.

Mothers take care of the cubs, and continuously stay with them for the first few days. Fathers keep other males out of the area. Other than that, they do not take part in caring for the litter of cubs. Grown up males travel widely in search of a new territory. Females may take over a part of their mother's territory, or settle in a territory that borders with their mother's terrain.

At about eight weeks of age, the cubs are ready to follow their mother out of the den. They learn to be independent. The cubs become sexually mature by 3-4 years of age. Breeding activity in the tropical regions has been recorded throughout the year. Tigers of the northern regions tend to breed in the winter months.
